1. FIND A PROPER STORAGE SPACE
Find a proper storage space for your bags that is far away from direct sunlight as this can cause leather to fade or dry out. Pick a place that also has good airflow and low humidity as high humidity can lead to mildew. Now if you stay in a place with high humidity, add silica gel desiccant inside your bag storage area. These are available at craft stores or better yet, don't throw the little bags that come with your vitamins! Reuse them for your luxury items. (Photo: stylenbeautyounge.com) |
Avoid dust by properly storing your bags inside dust bag covers. If you can’t find one, use a natural fibre pillowcase instead. Never store them in any kind of plastic or vinyl as this material traps wetness and eventually may cause molds. To keep your bags in its proper shape, you can purchase purse inserts for support or you can also be economical by stuffing your bags with towels or tissue paper instead. (Photo: deluxemall.com) |
Never put your handbag on the floor! Just imagine all the germs and nasty things living there. You can carry around a portable bag hook or just keep your bag on your lap or behind you on your chair. To protect your bag handles, you should also always handle your bag with clean hands. Stop yourself from handling your bag right after putting on any kind of foundation, lotion or hand cream. If you know you are going to visit your hairdresser, bring a smaller or less expensive bag instead. Chemicals used there can easily splash on your bag and leave a permanent and painful stain. If you know it’s going to rain, bring a water resistant bag instead. This will save you the anguish of crying over water stains. (Photo: ink361.com) |
First of all, do not attempt to use any hand cream, lotion or even alcohol to clean your leather. Don’t even think about cleaning any dirty spot with baby wipes either. Here are some home first aid solutions to common bag mishaps. If you get oil on your bag, put cornstarch immediately. Rub it gently in to absorb the oil then brush off with a very soft brush or cloth after. For ink stains and dirt, use a white eraser to erase the spot. Do this gently with very little hand pressure. If the ink has already set in, then you really need professional bag care. For water stains, you really need to bring your bag to a professional leather technician. But to avoid this, you can use protection treatments on you handbag as soon as you buy it. Just make sure you follow directions exactly as written, otherwise you might just discolor your bag. |
